Citron Paint Samples

My Citron Paint samples arrived today. I have to say that their packaging was very nice, they wrapped the paint pots in bubble wrap and surrounded them with paper. They also included a personal note to me along with a bag of lemon candies. Sweet!

I didn't waste any time heading out to the wall to swab some of the paint on.

This first photo shows from top to bottom: Ellen Kennon's Pumpkin Spice , Citron's Sweet Spot and Steamy Romance. I hate to say it but I think Sweet Spot just might have knocked EK's Pumpkin Spice off the list. No final decisions will be made for awhile but I'm really loving both of these Citron colors.
These next two from Citron are called Zorries and Prickly Pear. Again, I love them both. I think I like Zorries a bit better than BM's Saybrook Sage.
These last are of the purple/plum family. The two colors above are BM's Wet Concrete and Silver Fox, the ones I am considering for my bedroom. The bottom two from L to R are Citron's Vintage Velvet and Monsoon. Monsoon is a bit too blue for my purposes. Vintage Velvet is in the running.

The majority of my Devine Paint samples arrived at the end of last week. However, they packaged my order into two boxes and UPS seems to have lost one. So the last 5 samples should be here by the end of this week. Devine packages their samples in plastic pouches. Strange and not at all easy to use, in my opinion. As you can see I am not painting huge sample splotches. Once I get all the samples up and really get down to fine tuning my choices I intend to cover my splotches all up with some primer and paint bigger areas of the final choices. This may be a bit difficult since once I open Devine's pouches I'm not at all certain I can store them for reuse later. I'm going to try my best. I may just move some furniture out of the way and go ahead with these and paint larger areas. I have 16 samples however and I'm not sure I really want to do that.

I also ordered 6 more sample colors from Ellen Kennon: Caribe, Slate, Sunset Rose, Lilac Mist, Mushroom and Bark.

I made end up painting the walls of the garage and the basement just so I can use a little bit of all the colors I love :)

Nifty Bathroom Storage~

This mirrored cabinet between the two pedestal sinks looks like it would be a piece of cake to make. *as always click on photo to enlarge*

It would be great for storage of shampoos, bath wash, medicines etc. and you'd get a nice full length mirror to boot! It's definitely an idea I'm hanging on to~

Fluff 'Em Up~

We went out to dinner tonight and afterward stopped by Pier One. I wanted to look at pillows for the new sofa and I scored. The pillows were normally $30 each and were on sale 40% off! Cha-ching!

Here they are:
The above are an orange color and a beige/cream/sand color. They'll look great with the sofa.

The next one I'm pretty sure will be fine...but I'm not throwing the receipt away until after the sofa actually arrives and I see them on it. The photo does not represent their true color at all. They are a deep sagey green and I think they'll really look good with the other 2.

They are slightly iridescent as shown here but the photo reads a little blue green and I don't see that at all when looking at them here.

Now I need my sofa!!

Ellen Kennon's Pumpkin Spice in a Bathroom~

These photos below are the ones I saw that prompted me to order a sample of EK's Pumpkin Spice paint. I think the color looks heavenly in this bathroom. I was seriously considering using it for my new master bath but I want the master bedroom, closet and bath to flow color wise and I'm not really interested in using this or a color like it in my bedroom. So it will either be used to repaint our current bathroom or not at all.

Final 2 colors for today~

This color is BM's Monticello Rose. I like it and I plan to show it to Courtney to see if she thinks it will work in her bedroom. Lately she is all about pink even though she went through a long, long stretch of time that she wouldn't look at, wear or touch anything pink. It's a nice color so it's definitely still on the list.
This last color is EK's Pumpkin Spice. I want to LOVE it...but I'm not there yet. I like it. A lot. Love...nope. EK's paints are definitely thinner than I expected. I don't know if you can tell but I put a third coat on the left side of this sample and not on the right. The right has 2 coats. I think it looks good with my wood trim. I think with the right accessories it would look great. I need to post that bathroom photo I found with this color on the walls and you can see how pretty it can be in a bathroom with the right cabinets and granite. Gorgeous. So it's still in the running. Probably not for the master bath or Kylie's room. Maybe the guest bath.

First of the Paint Samples~

Ta Da! This is the first of the many paint samples I have ordered to try to help me choose paint colors. Each of these samples has had a second coat so they're in what I'd consider the right consistency for proper representation of their color. Let me introduce you:
These 4 colors are from top to bottom: Ellen Kennons Gustavian Grey. I love this color and I'm pretty sure it will end up being used as a ceiling color in several rooms. The next color is Benjamin Moores Revere Pewter it's a nice color but does not wow me. Then there's BM's Silver Fox, this color has a slight hint of lavendar, I kind of like it paired with BM's Wet Concrete which I'll show in another sampling. Final color is BM's Quiet Moments. It has a blue cast to it and though it's nice it's probably not going to go with any room in the house.
Color on the far left is Ellen Kennons Bronze and it is definitely out of the running. I don't care for the way it looks with the wood trim so it would not do for a living room wall color at all with our wooden ceiling. The color on the right is BM's Pecos Spice and I kind of like this color. A bit more on the rose side than the bronze so it remains on the list.
Color on the far left is BM's Wet Concrete. This color is very definitely in the running as my new bedroom wall color. Maybe even the new master bath wall color. I'm not sure if you can tell but the left half of the sample has a second coat and the right side does not. It covers pretty well on the first coat. I was using a small, cheap sponge brushes so a nice roller could make all the difference. The color to the right is once again the BM Silver Fox. It has just enough of a hint of lavendar in it that I think it would be a good color to paint the walls in our master bedroom closet. Both of these colors are at the very top of the master bedroom paint color list. I'm anxious to get the Devine paint samples. There's a deep purple color (Shantung I believe is it's name) that just may work as the bedroom wall color leaving Wet Concrete as the new master bath color and Silver Fox on the closet walls. Gustavian Gray for the ceilings. The wheels are turning...
These colors are greens. The photo truly does not do these colors justice, refer to the first photo for a better representation of these 3 colors. Top color is EKs Ashen Green. I'm disappointed. The color looked amazing in the sample jar. On my wall, not so much. Way, way too dark. For a paint that does not use black pigments it sure did seem to find some very dark tones. Second color is BM's Kittery Point Green. This color is actually more springy green than it appears here in the photo. It's not a bad color, I just don't see it in my house. The final color is BM's Saybrook Sage. It's not bad and is still on the list.

Ottomans

I almost forgot that I have new furniture coming sometime soon! I imagine we'll get the call in the next week or two. YAY for new furniture!

As I said in my other post I was looking around the net and found all kinds of goodies this weekend.

One of the sites I went to was Restoration Hardware. I originally went to the site to check out their paint colors. I had no idea that they sold furniture. I stumbled across these ottomans and I was smitten by this particular one.
I really love the above pattern. John thought it was too busy. He does like the striped one.

I think the striped one is a bit blah. Maybe we could thumb wrestle to see who wins???

I love it~

I was cruising around the web this weekend looking at bathroom vanities and I stumbled across this one:

Isn't it gorgeous? It's made by a company called Stein World. I don't know a thing about them but I sure do love this vanity. It's a bit pricey, $660.00, but daggone it...I love it. I wish it was a bit bigger. I don't want double sinks. We have them now and one of them has gone completely unused the 11 years we've lived here. But I still feel that this vanity is a bit small, more powder room size. *sigh* But I love it so it goes on my list.

The above cabinets come from Ballard Designs. They'd be perfect in the bathroom for storage of towels and etc. Two of these and that vanity would work out nicely...don't ya think?

**Haven't gotten around to putting up any of my paint samples. Hopefully in the next day or two I'll have pictures of those to share.

Color, Color, Color!

I was reading some blogs from Houseblogs.net this evening and saw where the folks at Creek House Renovation used Devine paints ( www.devinecolor.com) and loved them. That's all the push I needed to drag the hubby up to my computer to help me pick colors so I could order some samples. We got a little carried away and ordered 16 sample colors...eek!!!

We ordered Shantung, Damask, Georgette, Glass, Swell, Tide, Hosta, Manzanita, Mesa, Brick, Rain, Fog, Haze, Agave, Almond, and Skyline. Now I get to wait 8-10 days for them to arrive. I hate waiting!

Hopefully it won't be long before I can at least decide on the color I want to use in Courtney's room and then for the room that Kylie sleeps in when she is here. Those rooms can be painted before we kick off the big remodeling job.

When we do the remodel we will then need paint colors for the living room, dining room/kitchen, guest bathroom, master bedroom, master bedroom closet and the new master bathroom. It boggles my mind.

The Postman Delivers~

I spent an evening last week looking at the Benjamin Moore, Devine, Citron and Ellen Kennon's paint colors. I ordered samples from all 4.

Today when I walked out to the mailbox I found some of the paint samples I've been waiting on! Woot!
I love getting fun stuff in the mail.

I haven't opened any of them yet...I'll probably do that this weekend. However, I can already say that I'm loving EK's Pumpkin Spice and Ashen Green just by looking at them in their pots. I also am thrilled with what I see of BM's Wet Concrete, Monticello Rose, Pecos Spice, Saybrooke Sage and Kittery Point Green. Choosing paint colors is going to be HARD!

Right now I'm trying to figure out if I should choose wall color and then base flooring, cabinetry and tile choices from that. Or if I should choose all the other things and then choose paint color. It seems to me that it's 6 of one, half dozen of the other *shrug*.

Island, Granite and Backsplash

I found these photos on a site and saved them. I like the size of this island and I also like the colors of the island top, counter tops and back splash.

This island is 6.5 ft x 9ft. The top for this island is made of Caesarstone and the color is called Jerusalem Sand.

Chris asked me yesterday if an island this size wouldn't dominate the kitchen? This photo shows the amount of space around this island in this particular kitchen. I checked her post and she gives the dimensions of her kitchen as 22x20.

While I agree that an island of this size is a large piece of furniture, I think our expanded kitchen space will be able to accommodate it as nicely as the above kitchen does. Our new kitchen area will be approx. 23 feet wide and I'd have to go down a measure to get the length of the area but I think it will be approx. 30 ft. long. The length will include space for our dining room table and hutch. I'll measure that out sometime between now and tomorrow.
This photo shows the granite counter tops and the back splash of her kitchen. The granite is called Kashmir Gold and the back splash is Jerusalem Gold Mosaic tiles that are shaped like staggered tiny bricks. I love it! It's very different and provides a bit of texture in an area that is normally flat. I'm not certain that my color scheme will be gold/cream/tan but those tiny little bricks come in many colors and I'm definitely keeping them in mind for my back splash area.

Wrap up post~

So there you have it in a nutshell. Our hopes and dreams for changes we want to make to our home.

I hope we don't have to wait a long time to get started and I certainly hope we have not bitten off more than we can chew. John is a very handy guy. So there's so much he can do himself and with the people we know and the skills that they possess we should be ok. Nonetheless the endeavor is not going to be cheap and I find myself very nervous about making all the decisions that will need to be made as the plans become a reality.

I've spent many hours on the internet looking at kitchen designs, bathroom designs, cabinetry, flooring, paint colors etc. It boggles the mind!

I have made dozens of new folders on my computer to store copies of designs I like, lights, flooring, tile, marble, granite, travertine, cook tops, ovens, doors, cabinets, etc. The more I see the more confused I am.

I stumbled across this website ( http://colorstrategies.net/ ) on the Gardenweb in their home decorating section awhile back. I bookmarked it because the lady is local and her last name is the same as a very popular doctor in town. I think she may be his daughter or at least some relative as the name is not common. She is a color consultant. I've looked over her gallery and read about her pricing. The cost is kind of steep (thinking of my budget) but I'm seriously considering availing myself of her services. I know that once this remodel is done it's going to be a very long time before John will want to make any changes. Therefore any color choices I make need to be ones that I am going to be completely happy with and able to enjoy for a long time to come. I feel like I cannot afford to make any mistakes on color choice. There'll be no repainting, no second chance. From the pictures you can tell that repainting our living room is going to require huge ladders and/or scaffolding so that's definitely a one time shot and whatever choice is made for that room has to be one I can live with for I'd think at least another 10 years. Also with the way the rooms/areas are open to one another any changes in color for the 3 areas must flow well. I'm not at all confident in my ability to make such an important decision on my own. John is color blind...so it's all on me.

So my question...what would you do? Spend the $125 an hour (hopefully needing only an hour at most two) to get some expert assistance? Or would you wing it?

Master Bedroom Changes~

This photo is taken inside our bedroom. The door to the left goes into the bathroom. This is the only downstairs bathroom so all our guest use this bathroom. The door to the right is to our closet. We plan to remove the doorway into the bathroom and drywall over it.
This next photo depicts the squalor that is our master bedroom closet. For those of you who actually know me...shut up! For those of you who don't know me in RL, ignore the mess please. Our closet is big. We have 4 areas (2 on each side) to hang clothes. Each area has 2 shelves above them. You can see a dresser in the one area. We have this dresser in here because we don't have enough drawer space for our clothing. We plan to have our friend who is an interior trim carpenter revamp this entire closet area. In this area that you see here we plan to have drawers put in here from the floor to the height of the first shelf, two drawers across. Then we can get rid of the dresser and it will look much nicer. We plan to have him make doors to cover the shelves so the things that we store there are hidden. In the other 3 sections we plan to have him install double hanging rods. So that we can maximize our hanging space. There'll be one half a section that has space for hanging my dresses and the like but for the most part it will be double hanging space. We also want him to build us 2 large shoe racks for shoes. John and I seem to have a lot of shoes but I don't think we've wandered into shoe whore status...yet. In each of these 3 areas we will have Danny also put doors up to cover the shelving. Hiding the mess will go a long way toward making this closet a very nice space. The wall at the very back of the closet will become an archway and lead into our new private master bath!! I'm very, very excited about this!

This photo shows the part of the sun room that will become our new master bath. Where the bakers rack is the window that is now above our stove will find a new home. The glass in the window will be replaced with some type of privacy glass but at least it will allow some natural light into the space as the sliding door will be closed up.

We plan to have a toilet, vanity with lots of storage and a walk in shower. No tub. Neither of us takes baths so we just can't justify the expense of a fancy tub. If we want to take a bath the other bathroom that we've used all these years has the traditional tub/shower. We want the shower to have a seating bench in it, just incase somewhere down the road we find one of us needs it. We also want the lip of the shower floor to be low enough that as we age getting into the shower won't be an issue. Seeing the issues John's grandmother has with bathing we're trying to avoid those issues down the road.



We'll be painting the walls in our room a different color. On my monitor the paint color is showing very pink. But it's actually a cranberry color. I've loved it but after 10 years I'm ready for a change. John told me after he got done painting that room that he'd never paint it again! Some walls took as many as 6 coats to get the color even!! It was a true nightmare. If it wasn't for this remodel I don't think I'd have ever gotten him to repaint!

I'm also happy for this chance to paint the walls in the downstairs. We have a few areas where the house has settled and there are cracks that need to be repaired. One of those areas is visible right outside of our closet door. That door has a tendency to stick and needs to be fixed. All of those issues will be addressed during this remodel.

We will also be replacing all the flooring in the kitchen/dining area and the living room/hallway. At the moment we plan to recarpet the hallway and living room and then plan to either put down hardwood in the kitchen/dining area or marble tile.

We have a friend who does tile work and he is offering his services as well as his buyers discount. We also will be able to use another friends contractors discount to purchase our cook top and double oven. The woman who has cut John's hair for the past 20 yrs has a brother who owns a window company, so we'll be working with him to replace our sliders. YAY for generous friends.

Back to the living room and down the hall~

This photo shows the living room looking in from the dining area. We plan to bump the living room space back about 3 feet into the dining area once the remodel is done. We will then re carpet that area and the hallway. We'll probably stay with the same color family of carpet as it is very neutral and has served us well through a few changes in decor. We live out in the country so we have gotten by with only using valances on our windows. The only thing out our front door once you get past our front yard is the road and a corn field.
This photo shows the front doors. I'd love to swap those out someday with a single door and side lights but John is very against that idea. He loves being able to open both doors up when moving large items in and out of the house. He has a valid point. So I'm sure my dream of a beautiful wooden door and side lights will remain a dream :( Right in front of the doors are the stairs to the upper level.

A couple more views of the sun room

You can see the 3 sliders that we'll be doing away with. The bit of wall between the first door on the left and the second is where the new wall will be put up for the kitchen expansion. The section of kitchen cabinets we'll be moving along with the double wall oven will be along that new back wall. The exercise equipment you can barely see behind the chair will be finding a new home down in the rec room in the basement. The area to the left where the first slider is I hope to put a row of lower cabinets. Right now all my canned goods and other food stuffs are kept in the pantry area in the laundry room. I'd prefer to move these up to the actual kitchen. It's a pain to have to go down to the laundry room to get a can of corn when you're preparing dinner. Ideally what I'd like to have is one tall (floor to ceiling like we already have) cupboard that has the pantry shelving in it and then four lower cupboards for additional storage. I'm almost positive that we can get cabinets that match what we have exactly. If not...there'll be no additional cabinetry going into the expanded kitchen other than an island. I can live with that...but I'd rather be able to get the additional cabinets.

This is another view that shows how long the sun room actually is. Definitely a long and narrow space any future sun room will have a much different foot print.

Current Sun Room...Soon To Be Dining Room/Kitchen

This photo shows the door to the sun room open and a peek of what will become the new expanded dining room and kitchen area. This room is 15 ft. wide and 50 ft. long. At present it has 5 sliding doors that lead to the outside. Three of those doors will become exterior walls and the remaining two will be replaced with new French doors that eventually will lead into a new and improved sun room. But that addition is at least 4-5 years after all this work is done.
To the left when you enter the sun room you will see a mess. This room is very cold in the winter unless you leave the French doors open all the time. I am forever shutting them because of the cool breeze that floats into the rest of the house. I blame this on the totally crappy cheap ass sliders the builder put in. We've had the glass replaced in all of them twice in 11 years due to the seal breaking and allowing moisture to seep in and make them completely clouded over. The company informed us the last time that they'd not replace them again. I can't say I blame them. I'll be glad to see them land in a dumpster when we get started on the work. The door you see there leads into the laundry room. This door will be gone. I'd rather have a solid wall and just use the other door to get to the laundry room. The antique buffet will also be moved elsewhere.
The dining table and chairs here will be stored until we once again have a sun room. The other mess you see there is one of our current works in progress. We are recovering 4 chairs that were left in the basement by the builders. They come in handy for extra seating but they needed an overhaul. That mess will be relocated to the lower level work room.
This is the view to the right when you step into that area. It's a mess out there right now. The chair from the living room got moved out here to make room for the Christmas tree. Kylie's wagon is there as well as the tub that we keep our bird seed in.

Dining Area & Kitchen

This photo shows the opening above the sink in the kitchen (and a gratuitous shot of my new Dyson DC17 vacuum which is the absolute bomb I might add!). If you were to continue down the hall to your right you'd see the door to the lower level, the downstairs bathroom and the master bedroom.This is the dining area. You can see that there is no real definition between this area and the living except this area is not carpeted. The door straight ahead shows the mudroom. There is the door to the garage in there as well as to the right there is the door to the laundry room. You can barely see here on the right the French doors to the sun room.The kitchen. It's small but I actually loved its size when we first moved in. Our other house had a good sized kitchen and I just loved the intimate feel of this kitchen. As time has gone by I realized that what I really liked about this kitchen was the way I could be in there cooking, whatever, yet still be a part of what was happening in the living room. I have adequate cabinet space in this kitchen, that's not the issue. The issue is when we have big family dinners everyone wants to hang out in there...one look at this photo and you understand what a problem that is. If I'm in there trying to finish up cooking I find myself constantly tripping over others or feeling claustrophobic because they're all breathing down my neck. I don't accept offers of help with dinner because it's easier to do it myself than to have an extra person in there muddling about.

The section of cabinets you see in the above photo is going to be moved during the remodel. We'll still be using the cabinets as they're in excellent condition. We plan to purchase a new double wall oven and place it one set of cabinets over from the refrigerator (which will be staying right where it is) and then the rest of the cabinets will go along what will be an expanded back wall. We'll have an island that will contain an electric cook top. We'll be selling our current stove.
This side of the kitchen will remain in tact. Nothing will change here except the counter tops and back splash area. Right now there is no real back splash other than a continuation of the counter top. I hate the current counter tops. They're off white with a bit of texture and no matter how much I scrub I just don't feel like I get them completely clean. We'll be replacing those with either marble or granite I suppose. We're just beginning to look at those options. Naturally price will play a part in our final decision. Whatever material we choose for the counter tops we'll also use as the surface of the island.This photo shows the French doors that lead into the current sun room. I truly believe that the sun room was an after thought. These French doors are exterior doors. They're very heavy and there is a threshold that appears to be the type you'd use for an exterior door. The window above the stove is also framed on the other side just as you would a window on the outside of a house. It has a screen and exterior trim on it.

That entire wall will be removed and the kitchen/dining area will be expanded 15 feet out.

Living Room

I thought I'd post some photos of the interior of my house. This will give me a place to document our thought process as we make plans to do some remodeling to our house. First a bit of background.

We've lived in this house since December of 1995. The home was built by a local man and his sons who are all firefighters but build homes as a sideline. They do excellent work though I do take issue with some of the materials they chose to use (such as bottom of the barrel medicine cabinets, sliding doors in the sun room, exterior instead of interior French doors between dining area and sun room, a window framed for the outside of a house over the stove looking into the sun room to name a few things)

No one lived in this house before us. (not exactly true the builder and his wife lived here for 3 weeks while waiting on their new place to become available) So when we moved in everything was brand new. The walls were all white and everything else was also completely neutral in color.

We haven't had to do a lot since we've lived here. We did paint both bathrooms (we made over the upstairs bath and it's documented in this blog elsewhere), we painted the master bedroom, Courtney's bedroom and Jason's old room that Kylie uses. We put wallpaper up in the loft area. We painted the downstairs family room and had it carpeted. We started work on the room above the garage and had it carpeted as well. It still has some work to be done in there.

We also painted the living room, kitchen and dining area and I sponge painted the walls. I like it because it gives the walls a little something without being overwhelming. We also put up border in the dining area/kitchen. As you will be able to see in the photos below these 3 "rooms" are all open to one another so whatever you do to one effects the others. When we do this remodel it is going to be necessary to repaint the entire area as well the newly expanded kitchen/dining area. I have NO real idea what color scheme I want to use...nothing. This is going to be a real adventure.

This is a view of the living room taken last night after we got the Christmas tree out. The furniture placement isn't where things usually are, not that it matters as we're getting new furniture in a few weeks.

The door you see there is the door to the mud room, laundry room and garage. Kitchen Island Ideas

I'm going to use my blog as a place to "store" ideas that I come across for the projects we have in mind for our house.

Todays offering is Kitchen Islands that I like. Right now our kitchen is a galley type kitchen. To be honest it's big enough for me...but only me. If John is in there putzing around, he's in my way. When we have family dinners...forget it...I'm ready to pull my hair out by the end because of all the tripping and stumbling over everyone. And it's true...no matter what the size...the kitchen IS the gathering spot. When your kitchen isn't very big...that makes the gathering less than fun.

So we're going to expand the kitchen and dining room area into the existing sunroom using that additional 15 feet to open the kitchen/dining areas up and then that will also allow us to add to the living room area when the dining room area shuffles back. Those 3 areas are already open to each other now. We have a very informal floor plan. I'll have to put some pictures up here when I get the Christmas tree out of the living room!

Anyway...here are 2 islands that really appeal to me:

This first island is exactly what I'm thinking of as far as size. Any island we install will be large. It will also have an electric cook top that has at least 5 if not 6 heating areas. Nothing more frustrating than cooking a large meal and not having enough burners. I also want drawers for pots and pans as well as a place for storing cookie sheets and the like. Then I want enough surface area for eating space at the island as well as the ability to use it to set out food when we have everyone here for holiday dinners. So the size of the above island appears to be perfect for those functions. Ive become very fond of the rubbed black finish...but I'm not sure I want it in my kitchen.


The above island is definitely not large enough but I do like the two levels and I like the eating area. The upper area would have to be much larger and the sink would be swapped out for a cook top. But it's a style that appeals to me.

I'm glad that we've been able to determine that we have enough kitchen cabinets and won't have to replace them. That's going to save a lot of money. I'll admit I'd love to have all new cabinetry. There are so many beautiful cabinets out there. But if we were to do that it would cost us a small fortune and I just don't want to be in debt forever to do this remodel.
